Temperature

What is Temperature?

Temperature, or the degree of hotness or coldness of a substance or environment, indicates the average kinetic energy of particles within that system or object. A higher temperature means particles are moving faster and have more energy, while a lower temperature signifies slower movement and less energy.

Commonly Used Temperature Units

  • Celsius (°C) is the most widely used unit in many countries, including those using the metric system. It has a freezing point of 0°C and a boiling point of 100°C.
  • Fahrenheit (°F) is primarily used in the United States with a freezing point of 32°F and a boiling point of 212°F.
  • Kelvin (K) is the standard unit for temperature in the International System of Units (SI). Its freezing point is 273.15 K, and its boiling point is 373.15 K. The value 0 K represents absolute zero, which is the lowest possible temperature where particles cease to move.
  • In addition to these commonly used units, there are other less frequently utilized temperature scales that were once in use but have since been discontinued.

Less Commonly Used Temperature Units

  • Rankine (°R or °Ra) is an imperial unit of temperature similar to Kelvin, but it uses the Fahrenheit scale as a reference. Its freezing point is 491.67°R and its boiling point is 671.67°R.
  • Réaumur (°Ré or °Re) was once used in Europe during the 18th-19th centuries, with a freezing point of 0°Re and a boiling point of 80°Re.
  • Newton (°N), named after Sir Isaac Newton, is used to measure temperature based on the expansion scale of liquids. It has a freezing point at 0°N and a boiling point at 33°N.
  • Delisle (°D) was invented by Joseph-Nicolas Delisle in 1732 but is no longer used. It has a freezing point of 0°D and a boiling point of -150°D.
  • Rømer (°Rø) was invented by Danish astronomer Ole Rømer in 1701, with a freezing point at 7.5°Rø and a boiling point of 60°Rø.
  • Planck Temperature (Tₚ) is used in theoretical physics to denote the highest possible temperature according to current theories, with its boiling point at approximately ~1.416808×10³²K.
