What are Condition Monitoring Systems?

Condition monitoring systems are systems for checking and tracking the condition of machinery or equipment while in operation. The primary purpose is to prevent damage or unexpected downtime by analyzing data from inspections such as vibration, temperature, sound, and speed. There are two main types of inspection:

  1. Online Monitoring - real-time monitoring using sensors attached to the machinery that continuously send data back to the system
  2. Offline Monitoring - scheduled inspections using tools capable of analyzing during or after operation

Types of Condition Monitoring Systems

  • Vibration Monitoring - checking for defects such as imbalance and bearing wear through vibration analysis
  • Thermography - using thermal imaging to detect abnormalities in areas with heat accumulation
  • Oil Analysis - examining lubricating oil in machinery for metal particles or contaminants

Sensors Used in Condition Monitoring Systems

  • Vibration Sensors (Accelerometers) - measuring machine vibrations, especially to detect abnormalities such as imbalance, bearing wear, or worn gears
  • Temperature Sensors - measuring the temperature of machinery or components like motors, bearings, or electrical equipment to identify issues caused by excessive heat
  • Pressure Sensors - monitoring pressure in systems such as pumps or compressors to ensure proper operation under appropriate pressure levels
  • Acoustic Emission Sensors - detecting sound waves or energy releases from within machinery, indicating potential material failures like cracks
  • Oil Condition Sensors - analyzing lubricating oil for contamination or degradation, signaling internal machine wear
  • Current Sensors - measuring electrical current flowing through motors or electrical equipment to indicate overloading or electrical system issues
  • Displacement Sensors - measuring the movement of machine components to identify abnormalities such as misalignment or unintended component movement
