What are 3D cameras?

3D cameras are devices used to detect objects and display them in three dimensions. They can capture scenes and objects in spatial dimensions instantly without requiring moving parts, making them durable and wear-resistant. They can be applied in various fields such as packaging, material handling and logistics, airport logistics, collision avoidance, and area and person inspection.

How 3D cameras work

  • Stereo Vision uses two cameras placed apart to capture images from different perspectives. It then calculates the difference between the two images to determine depth.
  • Time-of-Flight (ToF) measures the time it takes for infrared or laser light to travel from the camera to an object and back, allowing calculation of the object's depth based on this travel time.
  • Structured Light projects a patterned light such as a grid or line onto an object and captures changes in the pattern to calculate depth.
  • Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) uses laser light to measure distances between the camera and objects by sending and receiving light signals.
