The full name of the IP value is International Protection Standard, which is a protection rating according to IEC 60529 standards that allows machinery to protect against dust and water. There are two numbers following the IP designation; the first number indicates the level of protection against dust or dirt, while the second number indicates the level of protection against water.

The first position number value indicates the level of ability to protect various parts, including body and material, dust or powder. Each number has the following meanings:

Code 0 No protection

Code 1 Protection against direct contact with internal parts by fingers or objects larger than 50 mm.

Code 2 Protection against direct contact with internal parts by fingers or objects larger than 12 mm.

Code 3 Protection against direct contact with internal parts by objects thicker than 2.5 mm in diameter.

Code 4 Protection against direct contact with internal parts by objects thicker than 1.0 mm in diameter.

Code 5 Protection against direct contact with internal parts and dust ingress.

Code 6 Protection against direct contact with internal parts and complete protection from dust.

Second Position Number Value

The second position number value indicates the level of ability to protect against water.

Code 0 No protection

Code 1 protects against dripping water in a vertical direction.

Code 2 protects against dripping and splashing water up to 60° from the vertical.

Code 3 protects against spraying water up to 60° from the vertical.

Code 4 protects against water splashed from any direction.

Code 5 protects against low pressure jets of water from all directions up to 1 kg/cm² at a distance of 3 m.

Code 6 protects against strong jets of water from all directions up to 1 kg/cm² at a distance of 1.3 m.

Code 7 can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter depth for 30 minutes.

Code 8 can withstand continuous submersion in water up to 1 meter depth without time limit.
