How the pH Meter Works

The portable pH meter uses an electrode to detect electrical potential differences that are related to hydrogen ion activity in a solution. The internal circuit then processes this signal and displays it as a pH value.

pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution, generally solutions with a pH below 7 are considered acidic while those above 7 are considered basic. At approximately 25°C, the pH of a solution may change according to temperature and composition of the sample.

Temperature compensation ATC/MTC adjusts calculations based on changes in electrode response to temperature but does not make the changing pH value constant with respect to actual conditions of the solution.

Meter Measurement Functions

  • pH Measurement: Measures pH values in the range of -2.00 to 18.00 pH
  • mV Measurement: Measures electrical signals from electrodes in the range of -1999 to +1999 mV
  • Temperature Measurement: Measures temperature in the range of -5 to +110°C according to supported probes
  • 3-Point Calibration: Supports up to 3-point calibration
  • ATC: Automatic Temperature Compensation when using supported temperature probes
  • MTC: Manual Temperature Compensation setting
  • Data Storage: Stores up to 200 measurement results according to the catalog data
  • pH Meter Calibration (pH Calibration)

The KEPLER PH-210E supports calibration up to 3 points using standard NIST buffer solutions to adjust system response for optimal performance.

Calibration point selection should cover the pH range of the solution being measured, such as using a buffer near pH 7 along with an acid or base buffer according to sample characteristics. Use types and values of buffers supported by the instrument per manual guidelines.

Use fresh buffer solutions that are not expired and free from contamination, rinse electrodes between each calibration point.

    Usage and Measurement

    • Check the condition of the meter, electrode, and battery before use.
    • Select probe types suitable for the solution to be measured.
    • Prepare standard buffer solutions for calibration.
    • Rinse electrodes with appropriate water according to manual instructions, then gently blot without rubbing the surface.
    • Calibrate the instrument following manufacturer's steps.
    • Select ATC or MTC temperature compensation as per equipment used.
    • Submerge electrode into sample solution at levels specified by the manual.
    • Wait for measurement values to stabilize before reading and recording results.
    • Rinse probes between samples to reduce cross-contamination.
    • After use, store electrodes in recommended storage solutions provided by manufacturer.

    Examples and Usage Guidelines

    • Measure pH of wastewater treatment water.
    • Check the acidity-alkalinity of water during production processes.
    • Use for field water quality measurements.
    • Test pH values of solutions in laboratories.
  • Can be used in the food and beverage industry when selecting the appropriate electrode
  • Measure pH of water in public utility systems
  • Used for chemical research and testing
  • Check pH before and after water conditioning processes

Considerations

  • The instrument should be calibrated according to the frequency specified in the quality system or manufacturer's manual before use
  • Select electrode types that are suitable for the properties of the sample and operating temperature
  • pH electrode tips must be maintained and stored as per the manual to prevent deterioration
  • Generally, glass pH electrodes should not be kept dry or soaked in distilled water for long periods unless specified by the manufacturer
  • The measurement range of pH -2.00 to 18.00 is the capability of the instrument, and measurements at the end of this range require appropriate electrode and calibration methods
  • Measuring mV does not automatically confirm that the instrument is ready to measure ORP with all types of probes; electrode compatibility must be checked
  • The IP65 rating is for dust and water protection of the unit, not an endorsement for submerging the unit in water
  • Check the list of electrodes, buffer solutions, charging equipment, and accessories actually shipped by the supplier
