Position sensors

What are Position Sensors?

SCMA has been officially appointed as the sole authorized distributor of ifm in Thailand.

Position sensors are devices that detect the position of an object, allowing for precise spatial or movement data to be identified. They are widely used in industries and manufacturing processes where controlling the movement of parts is necessary, as well as for detailed distance measurements, to ensure maximum efficiency in production.

Types of Position Sensors

  • Potentiometric Sensors use electrical resistance to measure position, commonly used for linear and angular measurements. Suitable for applications that do not require extremely high precision.
  • Encoders are divided into two main types: linear and rotary, using digital signal reading to detect position. Primarily used in industrial robots and CNC machines.
  • Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT) use electromagnetic induction to detect linear positional changes by sending continuous electrical signals, suitable for high-precision applications.
  • Hall Effect Sensors use magnetic fields to detect position by sensing changes in magnetic force to identify object location. They are highly accurate and resistant to dusty or wet environments.
  • Optical Sensors use light for position detection, often involving lasers or LEDs combined with a photoreceptor to detect positional changes or movement, ideal for long-distance measurements requiring high precision.
  • Ultrasonic Sensors use high-frequency sound waves to detect distance or movement of objects. Suitable for detecting in areas that cannot be reached by touch.
  • Capacitive Sensors use changes in electrical capacitance according to position or distance, commonly used for detecting metallic objects or high-precision distance measurements.
  • Magnetostrictive Sensors use magnetic field changes to detect movement or distance. Popular in hydraulic systems and positioning in environments with high impact forces.

Capacitive Sensor (A sensor used to detect metal, non-metal, and all types of liquid objects)

Object detection sensors are important devices that enhance the efficiency of modern automated systems. Capacitive Sensors or capacitive sensors stand out for their ability to detect a wide variety of objects including metal, non-metal, and liquids without contact. At SCMA we are the official sole distributor of ifm electronic in Thailand, equipped with a team of experts to advise on selecting detection systems that meet your needs.

What is a Capacitive Sensor?

A Proximity Sensor is an industrial non-contact object detection sensor. A Capacitive Sensor is one type that can detect both metal and non-metal objects, including plastic, water, wood, glass, and dust. It uses the principle of electric fields and capacitance; when an object enters the detection range, the capacitance value changes causing the sensor to signal immediately. Suitable for liquid level measurement, seed or plastic pellet counting in silos through Sight glass with accuracy.

How Capacitive Sensors Work

Capacitive sensors use a front plate capacitor and ground to create an electric field via an oscillator continuously. When an object enters the electric field area, capacitance increases causing the circuit to oscillate and signal status change. Detection capability depends on the dielectric constant of materials, type and size of objects, as well as distance. Learn more about capacitive sensor technology.

Types of Capacitive Sensors

How many types are there? There are several types based on their working principle, and they can be categorized according to installation type and purpose:

General Proximity Sensor (Capacitive Proximity Sensor)

Standard proximity sensors detect both metal and non-metal objects at a range of 5-50 millimeters, working through electric field changes when an object enters. Suitable for position detection on conveyor belts, counting workpieces, or checking products in packaging.

Insertion Type Level Sensor

Capacitive sensors with probes inserted into containers measure liquid or solid levels when material level touches the probe and signals. Suitable for small tanks, silos, or pipelines where specific point-level measurement is required.

Submerged Type Level Sensor

Sensors submerged in liquids measure continuous liquid levels without additional probes by converting pressure into level data. Suitable for deep wells, large tanks, or high-precision water treatment systems.

Key Features of Capacitive Sensors

SCMA selects high-quality capacitive sensors from ifm electronic with standout features:

  • High Detection Sensitivity - Ifm proximity sensors have high sensitivity to detect insulating materials such as plastic, glass, and low dielectric constant materials. Widely applicable.
  • Non-Destructive - The non-contact detection of capacitive sensors prevents wear and tear on objects, reducing damage during use and maintaining product surface quality.
  • Durable in Industrial Environments - Operates well in dusty, wet, or oily environments. Special models have chemical-resistant housings for heavy-duty conditions.
  • IO-Link Technology - Ifm sensors come with IO-Link, a key technology in smart industry development. Enhances production efficiency, reduces errors, and increases process control accuracy.
  • Easy Adjustment - Capacitive sensors have adjustable detection sensitivity for materials and distances. Can be customized according to actual usage conditions.
  • Durable Longevity - No moving parts or wear-prone contact surfaces, reducing maintenance frequency and spare part replacement.
