What is an Inductive Proximity Sensor?

An Inductive Proximity Sensor (proximity sensor) is a sensor used to detect metallic objects. It is typically applied for position detection to control the operation of machinery. This type of sensor works by generating an electromagnetic field around the front of the sensor. When a metal object comes close to the sensor, it induces eddy currents that cause changes which can be detected as the metal being in proximity to the sensor.

Features and Usage of Inductive Proximity Sensor

  • An Inductive Proximity Sensor (proximity sensor) can detect all types of metals such as iron, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper but cannot detect non-metallic objects like plastic or wood. It performs well in environments with dust, water, and oil, making it suitable for industrial applications with messy conditions or chemical contamination.
  • An Inductive Proximity Sensor (proximity sensor) is often used to detect objects at short distances, such as checking if metal parts are in the correct position during production. It does not come into direct contact with the object, thus having a long service life.
