What is a COD Meter?

The full name of COD Meter is Chemical Oxygen Demand Meter. It is an instrument used to measure the amount of oxygen required to oxidize all organic substances in water samples, known as COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), which indicates the quantity of organic matter present in the water and is expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L). The device operates based on chemical reaction principles related to the oxidation of organic compounds in water. There are primarily two methods:

• Closed Reflux Titrimetric Method: Uses an oxidizing agent such as chromium (VI) in sulfuric acid and refluxes the water sample. Afterward, a reducing agent like ferroin is used for titration of the remaining substance. The obtained value is calculated to convert into COD.
• Closed Reflux Colorimetric Method: Similar to the first method but uses spectrophotometry to measure the color of substances produced after oxidation reactions. The measured light absorbance values are converted into COD.

This COD measurement is widely used for water and wastewater quality monitoring.
