Shunt

What is a Shunt?

A shunt is an instrument used to measure electrical current indirectly. It is a low resistance device connected in an electrical circuit, and when measuring the current flowing through the circuit, using a shunt creates a voltage drop that can be measured and converted directly into current. This is an important tool for measuring and monitoring currents in various systems, relying on Ohm's Law (V=IR) which states that when current I flows through resistance R, it produces a voltage V across that resistor. Measuring the voltage drop across the shunt and calculating back to determine the current flowing through the circuit provides accurate current measurement.
